Perhaps someone can help me. I recently saw a video clip on making/installing radial purfling in a thread. I thought, "this is a great little tutorial. I'll have to refer to it when I decide to do radial purfling." Now I am d-----d if I can find it! Can anyone point me to it?

Thanks,
Max

Thanks, Todd et al. That is exactly what I was looking for. Now, where'd I put those glasses?

Or, with some woods, you can just make a log, cut strips and bend to fit. Install like regular purfling.
Log glued up.

Gluing boarder strips to one edge.

Cut large strip.

Glue boarder strips to other side, cut into purfling layup strips.

Bend strips with binding, or bend separately as I did. Bent on hot pipe. No problems.

Install.

It is possible that some woods may not work as well this way.

In the cabinet maker's world that's called 'cross banding'. I use cross band backgrounds in my braid rosettes. It's interesting because it reflects the light at a different angle than the braid, so that, when one is 'light' the other is 'dark'.

Here's another take on the radial purfs. This one is just EIR from side off-cuts. Construction is like inlaying shell using the plastic removable strip method. However, the glue used is Titebond. No matter what I try, the white purf line goes yellow if even a sniff of CA wafts in its direction. Thin the Titebond with water just a little bit, drop in a full length of side off-cut "on the straight" just below the waist and slide it around to where it's needs. Mostly it won't break as it goes around the bends, but it doesn't matter if it does. The break will be invisible, anyway. Cut the purfs after you've made the channel. Getting the width EXACTLY right (think Goldilocks) is the difference between a job that's a real pleasure and one that's a PITA.

Trevor, you might try thinned fish glue. I find it to be excellent for flooding rosettes when I inlay them.

Great stuff all!!! I've been inspired to give it a try.

I'm leaning toward the dark side myself. Todd's cocobolo, Trevor's EIR, or Filippo’s ebony.

All very inspiring! Filippo, I'd love to see a front shot of that with the rosette!
